CASE STUDY

Raymond James
Financial Center

The Situation

Keeping with today’s modern trend, high-rise office buildings continue to add expansive windows. The Raymond James Financial Center is a prime example of the negatives and positives with this type of glass architectural design. Favorably, windows help occupants to feel less “closed in” and the exposure to natural light helps boost energy and moods, especially while working. But as hundreds of employees and the facility department at Raymond James found out, a plethora of glass introduces a myriad of serious problems. We were first contacted by the facility department’s staff in 2008. Their needs were reminiscent of most commercial buildings where comfort, safety, energy-efficiency and aesthetic appearance are common challenges. Located in St. Petersburg, Florida, year-round tropical weather dictated relentless heat which only added to their distress. Meetings, energy audits, and in-depth evaluations of the complexities of each building ensued with conclusive findings. Energy expenses were on a sharp decline. Heat and glare entering through the multitude of windows and glass entries were causing discomfort and eye strain. Additionally, safety from the sun’s harmful ultra violet rays, security from potential glass breakage and improving the exterior appeal of the complex were all viable concerns.

Window replacement for the center’s magnitude of glass would have consummated a staggering price tag. Furthermore, we knew we could deliver Raymond James an integrated, more cost-effective solution for every issue with a 2-3-year return on their investment as compared to a far longer one with new windows. Our goal to upgrade all their glass with peak performance led us to recommend Vista 28-8 mil Window Film. Known for its effectiveness to achieve an overall top-performing environment, we had every confidence in Vista’s capabilities. Reducing 78% of the sun’s heat would reduce the load on each building’s HVAC system and provide a more productive work place by keeping indoor temperatures comfortably consistent. Elimination of glare on monitors would also add enhancement for employees, while Vista’s 99.9% UV ray-blocking power would help protect occupants from skin damage and interior furnishings from premature fading. With the multitude of employees and clientele visiting throughout the day, it was also important to enhance the exterior aesthetics.

The Raymond James Financial Center complex is exactly that. Complex. Hailed as one of the Gulf Coast’s largest companies with a cluster of nine story glass buildings, an additional two-story building and three catwalks serving as connecting walkways, the film installation had to be strategically perfect. A glimpse of Raymond James: https://youtu.be/plFhZCCrseg At all times throughout the project, windows were filmed when it would be least intrusive to occupants. Having a daytime and nighttime shift enabled my team to coordinate installations without disruption to employees and kept us on target for a timely completion.

Cooling down the intense heat in the three catwalks was another prong to the project. As with the rest of the complex, we tackled the challenge with great success!

The Results

Comprehensive evaluations of each building’s distinctive character equipped us to engage in a unified plan of action. With our choice of a Panorama 28 8mil window Film Application partnered with the Wet Glaze Attachment System, Raymond James Financial Center wisely added key elements to make their complex a safer and more productive workplace with a reduced bottom line to their corporate energy budget. Their safety concerns were also resolved with a successful conversion of the entirety of their glass from being hazardous to becoming defensive assets.

The owner of High Impact Glass Solutions spoke for his entire team of expert installers when he expressed the completion of this 300,000-sq. ft. glass, one-year project!
